A Dual Battery System is a second battery in your 4×4 that allows you to power 12V accessories, such as a camping fridge, without the risk of draining your vehicle’s main cranking battery.
There are various types of Dual Battery Systems on the market. Some are standalone units not hardwired to your vehicle, while others are connected to the engine’s alternator.
When off-road recoveries end badly, it’s usually due to user error, low-quality recovery gear, or worn-out components. This can include UV-damaged snatch straps, internally rusted winch cables, incorrect shackles, or a poorly maintained High-Lift Jack.
It’s crucial to regularly inspect your 4×4 recovery kit and discard any items that appear worn, damaged or unsafe.
Likewise, the correct gear must be used in terms of load ratings, and you need to purchase recovery equipment that matches the weight of your 4×4 and its recovery points. For example, some bow shackle sizes may be too small for your vehicle or too big to fit through its recovery points.
In much the same way, although a High-Lift Jack is a supremely versatile recovery tool, it may only be helpful if your vehicle is equipped with the correct jacking points.
To avoid wasting funds on incorrectly-specced equipment or items you may never need, it’s best to begin with a basic 4×4 recovery kit that contains all the essentials. You can then add extra items based on where and how you use your 4×4 most often.
